In formulating prototype theory, Rosch drew in part from previous insights in particular the formulation of a category model based on family resemblance by Wittgenstein (1953), and by Roger Brown's How shall a thing be called oped, which may be labelled Prototype Semantics (hereafter PS). It has arisen mainly under the influence of psyc^ho^ nature of human categorization. Rosch (1977) and Rosch/Mervis (1975) are possibly the most significant publications in this field. This al ternative semantic theory sees itself as being in opposition to Aristo Here we use prototype theory in a novel way: to investigate the semantics of a linguistic construction at two different points in development. In the classic study of Franks and Bransford (1971) they argued in general that the prototype comprises a maximal number of features common to the category, often “averaged” across exemplars. Prototype theory, as developed by Rosch, has had repercussions in two main areas of linguistics: lexical semantics and syntax. Word meanings are the names of categories, and the meanings of many words display characteristic prototype effects (fuzziness of category boundaries, degrees of representativity of category members). Prototype theory is a theory of categorization in cognitive science, particularly in psychology and cognitive linguistics, in which there is a graded degree of belonging to a conceptual category, and some members are more central than others. It emerged in 1971 with the work of psychologist Eleanor Rosch, and it has been described as a "Copernican revolution" in the theory of categorization for its departure from the traditional Aristotelian categories. It has been criticized by Prototype Theory and Prototype Semantics. by. Victoria Mears.
